I know a winning cover when I see one. And this is one, by far!
For the August 2013 issue, SA Rugby used about 40 000 images to create this amazing collage of Nelson Mandela, to celebrate their “Memories of Madiba” issue. Just look at the finer detail…
It’s not a new concept at all (incase you thought it might be). I remember Huffington magazine doing the same with President Barack Obama with their cover of 9 September 2012.
According to SA Rugby: “The Springboks would not be the Springboks we know today without Madiba’s efforts, therefore the concept was to have the portrait of Madiba comprised of some of the pivotal players (John Smit, Victor Matfield, Francois Pienaar and Chester Williams amongst others) and significant moments (95 & 07 Rugby World Cup, Tri-Nations and British & Irish Lions victories etc) that have occurred since South Africa’s return to international rugby after isolation.”
The cover was designed by Justin Evans, designer at SA Rugby, and I’m told by him that “as a follow through to the main feature itself, we used an iconic ’95 Rugby World Cup stadium shot with the plane in the background, [which] anyone who watched would remember!”
Knowing how much images are to buy via a service like Gallo/Getty Images or anything similar, this must have cost them a fortune to produce! But Justin informs me “they are a combination of our very own HSM Images and a few other subscription images.”
