Yes, guys, it’s official! MAXIM South Africa is launching in South Africa on 7 October 2013!
And it’s for real this time!
Why do I say this? Because you might remember in 2011 that there was talk of MAXIM coming to South Africa, even with press releases, but then nothing… I’m told that the reason for this was because these specific publishers never followed the correct channels, and never had approval from MAXIM US! *tisk tisk tisk* So the plug was pulled VERY quickly on THAT launch…
But now the new publishers Untapped World Publishing has taken the leap of faith, did the negotiations (months and months of it) and are bringing a localized version of this top selling men’s title (all over the world) to South Africa.
UPDATE: You can view the official Press Release at the bottom of this post.
This from WikiPedia:
Maxim is an international men’s magazine targeted at heterosexual adult males and based in the United Kingdom, and prominent for its cheesecake pictorials of actresses, singers, and female models whose careers are at its current peak.
Due to its success in its primary markets, Maxim has expanded into many other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada ,India, Indonesia, Israel, Belgium, Romania, the Czech Republic, France (marketed under “Maximal”), Germany, Bulgaria, Brazil,Chile, Greece, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Russia (where it stands now as the most popular men’s magazine), Serbia, the Philippines, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, Ukraine and Portugal (marketed as “Maxmen”).
With the American issue selling just over 2 million copies a month, it would be really interesting (and exciting) to watch what impact it will make in the South African market. MAXIM South Africa will come up directly with the following other Men’s Interest titles in South Africa, who also rely a lot on sex-sells…:
- FHM South Africa (With FHM’s massive declining ABC numbers, and similar market, I think they should be most worried…)
2012, Q2 2012, Q3 2012, Q4 2013, Q1 2013, Q2 37 277 37 444 29 382 32 270 25 614
- GQ South Africa (There ABC numbers are more consistent, but still low…)
GQ South Africa
2012, Q2 2012, Q3 2012, Q4 2013, Q1 2013, Q2 30 054 – 28 084 – 29 672
- Playboy South Africa (this title is now only, so doesn’t compete directly with the others anymore)
So why hasn’t Media24, Caxton, Highbury Safika, or any of the other big players taken the opportunity to launch a South African version of MAXIM before? I’m told that some of the big publishers have approached MAXIM US for a license, but they were reluctant to give it to a publisher that also has a competitive title (Male, 18 – 35 and with a sports or fitness angle) in their stable. Which is basically all of the big publishers, when you think about it…
And what about the massively popular MAXIM Hot 100 events and issues? Yes! South Africa will also have one, and are looking at hosting similar events! I’m sommer super excited already! MediaSlut just loves a little party…! *hint hint*
You can visit the website and countdown right there, but please note that the full site will launch only when the magazine is out.

Untapped World Publishing, makers of the monthly sports title Fighters Only SA and the quarterly high-end design publication Objekt© International, has secured the South African print, digital and mobile rights to MAXIM Magazine, the ultimate guy’s guide, from U.S.-based multimedia and publishing company Alpha Media Group.
The MAXIM South African edition premieres with the October 2013 issue, on newsstands nationwide on 07 October, 2013. MAXIM South Africa is already available online (www.maximmag.co.za), through Facebook – Maxim Mag-SA and on Twitter @maximmagsa.
MAXIM SA will be taking over Taboo nightclub on the 17th of October for our official launch party, come dressed in black, red or white and rub shoulders with SA’s A-listers, socialites and sporting personalities. This is truly going to be the biggest social event in the month of October.

Published under license in 16 countries, South Africa will be the 17th added to its domineering global imprint. “The key to Maxim’s success,” says SA editor in chief Dirk Steenekamp, “is the quality of the content, there will really be something for everyone to digest.
It’s the cool older brother, always ready with the best info and advice. We are thrilled to offer this unique voice and content to a new readership in South Africa.”
“It’s a complete marketing solution for brands,” he adds, “targeting males 18 – 35 for print, and 22 – 38 for digital.” Top international brands that have already taken advantage of this opportunity include; Samsung, Jeep, USN, TW Steel, Bad Boy and many others.
Designed to cater to ‘what men really want,’ the magazine is packed with the best local and international content – sports, fashion, entertainment, tech, upkeep, advice, fitness, motoring, sex – and let’s not forget the ladies; sooo many beautiful females on this planet, and it’s time to celebrate them properly.
The publication’s presence extends off the page, too.

MAXIM events are regarded as some of the biggest events on the social calendar and we’ll spare no expense to live up to the reputation in SA.
