My Tyd 1.2 19 January 2014

I attended the annual kykNET Silwerskerm-festival last year, and the movie “Faan se Trein”, with Willie Esterhuizen as the main character, won almost all of the awards! Unfortunately I couldn’t attend the viewing of the movie, but from what I’ve heard and read, it’s THE South African movie to watch in 2014!

Everyone knows Willie as the funny guy who does the slapstick (and sometimes low-brow) comedy with quite low production value (but massively popular!), so it’s great to see him adapt into a special role like Faan! Just have a look at the trailer and behind-the-scenes video;

My Tyd is featuring him on their cover this coming Sunday, with an interview about his movies and playing the iconic role of Faan. The movie is opening on 24 January 2014 in South Africa.

This from an Afrikaans press release I received:

“Komedie is ‘n nagmerrie vir die nar,” glo die gewilde akteur Willie Esterhuizen. Maar net so hard as wat hy mense laat lag, so laat hy hulle huil in sy nuwe fliek, Faan se trein. My Tyd Rapport het toe besluit dis hoogtyd dat dié verkleurmannetjie-aspek van Willie uitgebeeld word – letterlik. ‘n Muur van ‘n verhoogstel is in verskillende blokke verdeel en deur ‘n stilis met die hand geverf. Daarna is dit na die fotografie-ateljee in Cresta, Johannesburg, vervoer, waar die vloer geverf is en toe die man van die oomblik opdaag, is hy staangemaak en óók geverf. Willie praat binne kortpad oor homself, oor kritiek op sy piesangskilkomedie, oor Faan-wees, wewenaarskap en tweede huwelike.

Vir die begin van die jaar het My Tyd ook drie joernaliste uit die kantoor geskop om te gaan werk in wat deesdae bekend staan as “‘n derde plek”, en die tydskrif se samewerking met Kokkedore Tiaan Langenegger en Mynhardt Joubert se kykNET-program Makietie word gevier met ‘n rugby-opskop!
