The über and always fabulous Jackie Burger will be stepping down as editor of ELLE South Africa, with Emilie Gambade (@) filling these fabulously big shoes! For Emilie it’s one of those 360 degree success stories, as she started as an intern working at ELLE Decoration South Africa, and 17 years later, Editor of the sister-brand ELLE South Africa…!
Tweets of sadness (for Jackie leaving) and congratulations (for Emilie joining) has since been flowing in!

Emilie has always been in the magazine and journalism industry, but from what I could see, never in the spotlight quite as now! She was Editor of the Africa Report, and Fashion Writer at Daily Maverick (You can read her State of The Nation Fashion report right here) and at some stage she was an Investigate Journalist at Longevity. (You can read more about her and her experience in the press release below)
But most recently, she was the Managing Editor over at Marie Claire South Africa;
You can read one of her recent articles that appeared in Marie Claire South Africa (May 2014), below. To zoom in, you can click on the images which will open up big in a separate window.
Good luck not only to Emelie on the new venture, but also to Jackie for her exciting new opportunities!!! ELLE really was Jackie, and Jackie was ELLE…
NEW EDITOR FOR ELLE SA
Isiko Media (Pty) Ltd announced today that long-serving editor Jackie Burger will be handing over the reigns of ELLE SOUTH AFRICA to Emilie Gambade, currently managing editor of Marie Claire and fashion editor for the Daily Maverick and regular contributor to the Mail & Guardian.
Publisher of ELLE and Director of Isiko Media, Gisèle Wertheim Aymés comments: “Since Isiko Media (Pty) Ltd was awarded the license agreement to publish ELLE and ELLE Decoration in December 2013, Jackie and I have been in discussions over the future of ELLE from an editorial perspective. From the outset of our transition, Jackie has had a key input to strategy and the way forward for the ELLE brand in South Africa. Jackie indicated to me when we took over that while she was very positive about the changes, she has been the longest serving editor and that as soon as we had transitioned the business she would like to be released to pursue other opportunities that are important to her own self and career development.”
Under Jackie Burger’s editorship, ELLE magazine (@ELLEMagazineSA) has seen many successes. A number of innovative ELLE properties were introduced and established under her leadership and vision, including the ELLE Style Reporter, the ELLE Rising Star Design Awards, the ELLE Beauty Awards as well as the ELLE Female Factor focusing on women in society. In 2013, ELLE received a PICA Award for Consumer Publishing Excellence in the International Special Interest Category. And 2011 was also a highlight when ELLE received the Pica Award for Consumer Magazine of the Year, with Jackie awarded the PICA Award for Editor of the Year.
Says Gisèle: “It has been no easy task to find a successor for Jackie – not only due to Jackie’s stature in the industry but also to find the right candidate to steer ELLE into the future in an industry which is facing very dynamic challenges.”
Emilie Gambade (@LilyGambade) will take over the reigns from 01 July. Educated in France, after achieving her diploma in business administration in Sophia Antipolis, Emilie then went on to study in the United States where she graduated with a Bachelor in Science & Business Administration, majoring in Finance & Investment from Western Carolina University, Magna Cum Laude. She received the Best Student of the Year (Finance & Investment) – Outstanding Achievement Award.
Emilie also has a creative side to her personality and extended her studies further with a Diplôme d’école en art dramatique from Cours Florent and fashion design from Studio Berçot both in Paris. Emilie has continued her education in South Africa and honed her desire to excel in journalism at the Cape Institute of Technology and with the Arts & Culture Department.
“Emilie is no stranger to the ELLE franchise. She joined us in July 1997 when she came to South Africa as a young student to work on ELLE Decoration as an intern. She has a unique combination of business, journalistic and creative talent, but also an innate passion for the brand. She will bring to ELLE diverse media experience gained from working in several different media environments, from television production to print, both newspaper and magazine and digital platforms. These skills will be invaluable to the future development of the ELLE franchise in Africa,” comments Gisèle.
Jackie Burger will remain with ELLE until the end of September in a consultation capacity and focusing on some of ELLE’s special projects.
