Huisgenoot is turning 100 years old…! Well, in 2016 :-). But they’re planning in advance. Far in advance! As part of their upcoming 100th celebration, they’re shooting a movie! And the storyline is that of one of their readers! (read more below)

In the latest issue, editor Henriëtte announces this exciting project in her weekly editor’s letter.

Huisgenoot then also explains in detail what is required, and “how to write a romantic comedy”, which is what the movie should/has to be about. (For the full details, you’ll have to buy the latest issue)

To take it a step further, one of their journalists wrote her own ‘romantic comedy’ story, to illustrate to readers what they’re expecting of entries.

But what’s up for grabs? To be honest, I think not enough… If your winning story is the one that creates the storyline for this new upcoming Afrikaans movie, then you’ll win the following:

  • “The chance for your story to be created in a movie”
  • An Olympus TG-835 digital camera (Value: R4 500)
  • Cash prize of R5 000
  • (The 2nd and 3rd place winner also get a camera of the same value, but a cash prize of R3 000 and R2 000 respectively…)

Mmm… I would actually want royalties as well… but that’s just me. I’m sure there are 1 000’s of Huisgenoot readers who would give their story to Huisgenoot for FREE, but I think the prizes as they are at the moment, is a bit too weak for the amount of effort they’re expecting of readers. They’ve given away much bigger prizes for much less work expected from readers.

But that being said, I think it’s a great initiative of Huisgenoot, and I’m sure the movie and the whole campaign will be a great success!

Let the countdown begin to 20 May 2016, when it will be their 100th Birthday!
