House and Leisure’s magazine’ first stand-alone renovations issue, HL Before & After is now available. This annual glossy magazine features over 100 pages of renovation inspiration for today’s home owner. Don’t miss the latest make-over trends for your kitchen, bathroom, outdoor spaces and more.

Naomi Larkin, editor of House and Leisure, also write the following:

It is with great excitement that we introduce you to House and Leisure Before & After, our new special edition that is dedicated to the sometimes daunting but ever rewarding realm of home renovations. More specifically, this collector’s issue focuses on the real-life projects of HL’s readers and audience, and so this is very much your magazine.

Home makeovers have always been among the more popular topics covered in HL, with the July Renovations issue a bestseller every year for its inspiring case studies and features. We’re also constantly inundated with requests to share more examples of successful home transformations and helpful ideas on our pages and online. And so last July, with the goal of creating this new, focused product, the inaugural House and Leisure RenoInnoVation Award was launched with a cross-platform call for entries.

The criteria demanded that these were ‘the most inventive, ingenious home makeovers in SA’, whether room conversions, building extensions or an overhaul of the entire structure, and clear ‘before’ and ‘after’ snaps, plus a detailed description of the project, were required as part of the entry. From an astounding number of high-quality submissions from right across the country, our in-house team of judges had the tough task of picking a mere six houses as finalists. There was more than the occasional gasp of horror at the pre-reno snaps, which turned to amazement looking at the ingenuity and vision revealed in the finished projects.

Styled and photographed by the HL team, the six top homes are presented from page 27. These are followed by further renovations of specific parts of a home – from kitchens and bathrooms to exteriors and pool areas – gleaned from the many other entries, in the Solutions pages from page 73.

Because this issue is all about HL’s readers, we’re putting it out to you to choose the winning renovation, with brilliant prizes up for grabs for both homeowners and voters. All you have to do is decide which house deserves the RenoInnoVation Award and R30 000 cash prize, place your vote on the HL website, and you could win products towards a home makeover worth over R150 000 (see page 22)!

Also in this issue, you’ll find hardworking ideas from industry experts and the HL Black Book of recommended contractors and suppliers (page 94). And, if you’re not quite ready to take the plunge, Decor Editor Leana Schoeman offers advice on how to make a few changes without spending a cent (page 104).
